Finding the right size rug for your space

The most common mistake in buying a rug is going too small. A rug that's too small floats awkwardly in a room — the right size anchors your furniture and makes the space feel intentional.

Here's a simple room-by-room guide.

Living room
The most important room to get right. The two most common approaches:

All legs on — all furniture legs sit on the rug. Requires a larger rug (typically 8x10 ft or bigger) but creates the most cohesive, luxurious look.

Front legs on — only the front legs of your sofa and chairs rest on the rug. Works well with a 6x9 ft rug and is the most popular choice for Indian living rooms.

Rug only — the rug sits in the centre with no furniture on it. Works best as an accent piece in larger rooms.

Bedroom
Place the rug under the lower two-thirds of your bed so it extends on both sides and at the foot. For a queen or king bed, a 6x9 ft or 8x10 ft rug works well. For a single or double bed, a 5x7 ft is usually ideal.

Alternatively, use two smaller rugs — one on each side of the bed.

Dining room
Your rug should be large enough that chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. Add at least 60cm beyond the table on all sides. For a 6-seater table, a 8x10 ft rug is the minimum.

Entryway / foyer
A runner or small accent rug works well here. Standard runner sizes: 2x6 ft or 2.5x8 ft. For a wider foyer, a 4x6 ft works well.

Study / home office
A rug under your desk and chair — large enough that the chair stays on the rug when pushed back. A 5x7 ft or 6x9 ft is usually right.
